Is 35mm Film worth the cost?
There is no better feeling than film scans day. The anticipation that comes from waiting to see what was developed, I literally get butterflies when I see that email pop up in my inbox that my film scans are ready.
This time was no different. Thank you Indie Film Lab for developing and scanning these!
The Expense
There is no doubt film is expensive these days. A roll of film, depending on the brand and quality costs anywhere from $7 - $25+ that’s just for film. Developing is another story, if you outsource this its generally $11 per roll for developing plus scanning or printing costs (for me it was $22 roll for developing and scanning). It’s not cheap when you add it all up.
Is 35mm Film Worth it?
Honestly, there is nothing else like it. I love the look of it, the grain and light leaks, the first or last slide of the roll is always the biggest surprise. Its a unique quality that you just don’t see any more.
I use it sparingly, but I recently went out and shot a full roll in one setting, not worrying about the cost of using it sparingly and it was eye opening to see that in a way that I would shoot digital, on a walk with Kai.
A Walk with Kai
This walk reminded me so much of my old film days, when film was more affordable. I don’t remember the last time I went through a full roll of film so quickly. But seeing film this way, in story form is the way that I want to remember life. It makes me think about capturing all of our family moments on film this way.
It is more personal, because the grain hits you harder with time.
When I look back at my film photos in time, its never something that I regret capturing. There is definitely something nostalgic about it. It feels different.
