Raising Kai | 5 Months Old
It has been such a joy raising Kai. We adopted her through the West Suburban Humane Society at the end of December. It has been the best experience having a puppy around again. But I do have to remind myself often that she is only 5 months old because she has this distemper that reminds me of an older dog. She’s just that well behaved, even through her teething faze.
When we first got her we had high hopes of crate training her but we quickly learned just how much she needs us to trust in her and let her have her space.
We didn’t want to force the crate on her. She was already a few months old when we got her, and in her foster home she was used to being in a closed off pen with her sibling.
Instead, we quickly realized just how much she loves her freedom. We focused our energy into getting her out a LOT, and letting her run. She loves to run! I think pairing that with her freedom at home has been so good for her.
It’s not that we are newbie dog parents because we have been down this road a few times. But with a lot of things, the way we thought things were going to go are the total opposite… in a good way.
It is such a joy to wake up with her each morning (she sleeps in bed with us) and craves cuddle time and belly rubs. The first month went by so fast with her, and it has been incredible to see her journey of where she started (she was very frightened of the the unknown new place), to where she is now. I can see her confidence grow everyday.
I’ve always believed that things are just meant to be with the road we are on. I thank God everyday for sending us this angel. I don’t know how we found the perfect dog.
